Save position

Hello,

I know that you're swamped with bug and feature requests, but it would be great to have a "save position" feature. I'm trying to read a long document off and on when I have time, and it's a pain to have to keep scrolling to find out where I left off.

Alas, this may prove tricky

Since TouchFS–and pretty much any other application that views PDFs, Word docs, etc...–uses the system web viewing component to display these files, there's really not much "control" we have over the whole process.


We're looking into whether the viewing component may support the ability to scroll/jump to a page, but if it does, it seems to be hidden from us.


Of course, I'm the same person who thought Office document viewing wasn't publicly available to developers too, and thankfully I was big time wrong.  Here's hoping I'm wrong about this too.

It looks like this feature is present in a competing product so it must be  possible. I'd really like to be able to use touchfs as an ebook reader and I'm sure many others would too. Thanks for looking into this.

You're correct.  We saw it in our competitors viewer this past week.  This is just like the Office document viewing feature...we couldn't figure out what we were doing wrong until we saw another group accomplish it.  Hopefully this "save your position" feature will be similar.  Oftentimes just knowing something is possible makes it easier to figure out.


For the last week I've actually been coding our own PDF viewer instead of using the system component because it didn't look like the system component had a way to jump to certain pages or remember where you left off.  Now, I'm stuck with a dilemma...do I continue down the custom-viewer road which may take longer but where we could add additional features, or do I see what we might be missing in the system viewer in the hopes that it will be a quicker solution?


Decisions, decisions.  So, does anyone here know how Olive Toast accomplishes this?  *smile*  I wonder if they'd be willing to share some trade secrets?  *smirk*


Anyway, wish us luck, and know that we're hard at work trying to add this feature for our users.
