We'll be adding audio/video file support in the next update or two, and we're definitely looking into providing a basic Office (Word/Excel) viewer at a later state. Only problem being those are closed document formats and coding a decent viewer by ourselves will be a considerable undertaking.
We're keeping our fingers crossed that basic Word and Excel viewers become a standard part of the system as time goes on, so we can leverage it quickly.
I understand that it would be a difficult undertaking. I'm trying to decide between two different file viewer apps, and the other one looks like it will view .doc files, but your interface looks better and more usable from what I can tell.
The capability to view .doc files must be in the system somewhere, because I'm able to view Word files attached to an email message on my iPhone. But I guess you're saying that it's not available to developers?
You're correct...as far as we can tell, that magic that the Mail application performs isn't available to other developers. although I wonder what the web viewer would do if I had it try opening a Word doc. Cool...got something to experiment w/tonight.
All, we'll have Office Document viewing (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) available in the upcoming update. I figured out what I was doing wrong, which was...not much. The code was fine actually, but I've been testing on the simulator since I wanted to keep TouchFS 1.0 on my iPod in case I needed the original version for a support call or something.
Turns out, viewing Office docs in the simulator won't work. The same code when run on an iPod Touch or an iPhone actually works! Oops! Suffice it to say, we're extremely happy to have this completed. To make things even better though, we've also added Numbers and Pages viewers for our Mac users using iWork.
As many as we're able to code
