AFP support?
One of the things I miss from the pre 2.0 jailbreaking days is the AFPd program. AFP would be great to have again as you just toggle it on and your iPhone/touch just magically appear as a device. Nothing else needs to be done but drag and drop. Yes, it's Mac only but really neat. Possible?

Yes, it's possible
Yes, it's possible and is even being used by one of our competitors I believe. Needless to say I've been doing a lot of reading lately on the AFP protocol in the hopes of making things that much easier for our Mac users.
This is still a ways off, but definitely a possibility.
Try DataCase to get AFP access on your iPhone/Touch
Unfortunately as Paul has mentioned, this is not currently possible in TouchFS. However, DataCase (also available from the App Store) provides this functionality.

Stu
Yes, but...
... all that's available for support from DataCase is a button for sending an email. You guys don't come with that package. Guess I can wait a bit longer and see how things shake out.
:-(
Heh...I've said the same thing myself
Wow, am I glad to hear this from someone besides myself. Even here at TouchFS, it's hard not to like the DataCase or the Olive Toast (Files) products and marvel at their well designed web sites. We're truly jealous.
I know this may be cliche today, but I've often had to convince my own team that one of the benefits of our product is of the indirect type...it's the fact that we're trying to do something different here...trying to build a community of users around a product/company and, yes, put our children though school as well.
Our site may still be using a "default" theme and is definitely still taking shape, but I feel our heart is in the right place and we're moving in the right direction. We're trying to give our users a product that helps them in their daily lives, doesn't cause too much heartache (if you're on Windows, I'm sorry it's not easier to use) and give them a support system to fall back on and venue to make their voices heard.
Can you get similar functionality right now for cheaper, of course–we're not hiding that. Can you still get great support from a single "contact us" link? Sure, you could. But whatever else is going on, people are finding something they like here, and we're not about to let them down.
I completely agree with you.
I completely agree with you. I just wanted to mention 'DataCase' in case the users here hadn't heard of it. Personally I really like what Paul and his team are doing with TouchFS, especially the sense of community and providing these forums. That's one of the reasons I've yet to purchase a 'File storage' app for my iPhone. There's so much choice and each of the different applications has their own strengths and weaknesses. Plus, we're only one month in to the life of the App Store and I'm sure you'll we'll see amazing things from all of the developers.
Personally, whilst I prefer the support approach and availability of the TouchFS team, the one thing that I really like about DataCase is the fact that it uses AFP. So I can just enable the app and my iPhone immediately appears in the Finder. There's no need to use the Go | Connect to Server command in Finder and then have to enter the IP address each time. I'd love it if TouchFS could offer similar functionality. Then, I think, my decision would be made :-)
Cheers,
Stu
Something close...
We have our TouchFS Connect auto-connect tool in beta right now. Basically, it watches for any instance of TouchFS running on your network and allows you a single button connect option, or allows you to set a particular device to auto-connect whenever it becomes available.
Admittedly not as nice as AFP, but a time saver nonetheless (and just as Mac-only). I want to put a download package together soon and post it to the site, but would gladly email the beta version to anyone who's interested before that.
Now...if there was only a protocol that would work on OS X and Windows that wasn't WebDAV...and wasn't as complicated as Window's SMB protocol...that would be nice.
FTP?
FTP? Maybe? Maybe Not?
It would work great with a Mac, just a few clicks to set up. Windows would be a problem though.... since most people (I guess) don't know how to set up an FTP server. I already have a FTP server, made with Serv-U, but there are other programs that are very easy to use to set up a FTP server (and free). For example: Quick ‘n Easy FTP Server Lite.
Just a suggestion.
We thought of FTP originally
We thought of FTP originally, but the OS X Finder only has read-only access for FTP shares right out of the box, and we didn't want to force people to install some FTP client software.
On Windows, FTP access is about as clumsy as WebDAV–again, out of the box–but on OS X, WebDAV in the Finder has read/write access.
We'd really like to implement an SMB server so both OS X and Windows can see TouchFS as a standard Windows server–that would be great...and difficult. Oh well. Anyway, we're keeping the door open on other protocols, definitely...just sticking w/WebDAV for now.
