Use Bonjour names instead of IP address?

Hi Guys,

Loving the look of this app. Just a thought... Would it be possible to connect to the iPhone from Mac OS X using Bonjour names (e.g. iPhone.local) instead of IP addresses? Would just seem a bit more friendly then entering IP addresses all of the time. Not sure if it's feasible when using WebDAV but I thought I'd ask.

Cheers,

Stu

PS> Looks like you've got some new competition. Check out Olive Toast's 'Files' on the App Store. This type of app is starting to get very popular :-)

Thanks for the love!

Thanks for the love! I've been able to use a .local address to resolve my iPod Touch's IP before, but still can't use it to connect with. (The name to use in the .local address will depend on the name you've given to your iPhone/iPod in iTunes, I think)

We still need to step through this situation in the debugger to see exactly what's going on, and why it's not working. The IP changes frequently enough that having to setup a new connection on Windows is a pain. (Not so bad on the Mac since you can just edit the address each time you connect and don't have to got through anything like Microsoft's 12 step wizard each time)

As for "Files"...dangit! I just knew that would be a great app name! *smirk* It's good to see some competition in this space and see what other developers are doing.

Our goal is to add more features to TouchFS to make it worth everyone's while. Feedback and suggestions are much appreciated.

By the way, did I mention we have the utmost friendliest support staff and forums available? *smile*

Could iPhone OS 2.0.1 make a difference

Hi Paul,

Just saw the following info on another app's website, wonder if it's relevant to TouchFS as well:

"Files has always included Bonjour support. However most clients (e.g. Finder, Windows Explorer) don't support WebDAV Bonjour so do not automatically detect Files when it is running on your network. However, the good news is that from v2.0.1 of the iPhone OS, Apple have enabled broadcast of the iPhone's "local" Bonjour name. This means that on Mac OS X, or on Windows (with Safari or iTunes installed), you can now use your iPhone's name, rather than the IP address, in the WebDAV URL. For example, if you phone is called "iPhone" in iTunes you can use the following WebDAV URL to connect to Files:

http://iPhone.local:8080

Notes: iPhone OS 2.0.1 is required. This does not currently include the iPod touch which still uses the 2.0 firmware. Windows users must install Safari or iTunes to enable Apple's Bonjour networking support."

Interesting.... This info was found here:
