TouchFS - Ubuntu 8.04 - Gnome & the iphone 3G
I just thought I would post a quick report on my experience thus far running TouchFS with my iphone 3G in Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron's Gnome environment
If you are Using the Gnome desktop manager then you are using Nautilus File Manager
-From any open Nautilus window ## i.e. your home dir## select File > Connect to Server
-Under Service Type: Select WebDAV
-Under Server enter the IP Address that TouchFS conveniently gives you when on your iphone while running TouchFS you Select "Options". It Will Say something like : To access your device from another computer, connect to: http://192.168.x.xxx (Note: You must be sure that you have a Wi-Fi connection at this time or the address that TouchFS gives you will not work. In other words you can't connect to your device while it's in 3G or Edge mode so go to Settings>WiFi and connect to an appropriate wifi signal. Now that you're connected via wifi run touchFS on your iphone and hit options. The IP address there is the one you need to enter in the "Server:" field back in your Nautilus File window.
*Note: You can either enter the ip address without the port on it (i.e. leave off the :8080 in the Server: field and then make sure to put 8080 in the "Port:" field back in Nautilus. or just enter the whole thing and leave the port box blank.
So far I have had no problems importing and exporting html pdf, txt & html files with my iPhone, though why editing capability wasn't implemented in the 3G is beyond me. I'm currently running iTunes under VirtualBox 1.6.4 which allows me to sync my iPhone. VBox recognizes the usb 500GB external drive as music storage pointing iTunes there to look for music and it has, thus far worked quite well.
Any word on how long it will be before idev gets another 3G pwn out that will enable 3rd party aps?
I'm interested to know how other *nix users are faring

Great Information - Much Appreciated
This is excellent information for our Gnome users. I appreciate you taking the time to post this for the community.
We're still trying to find time to install a few distros so we can provide some "How To Connect" screenshots like we do for OS X and Windows, but this information you've provided is a great start. I'll copy this into the Documentation section later today if you don't mind.
Thanks again
Sure
Sure! Glad you can use it.
